Does Martyn's Law apply to your venue?

Four questions and an answer straight away. No email, nothing to install, and nothing you enter leaves this page.

  1. Count everyone, including staff and volunteers. Think of festivals and big services, quiz nights, big matches or parties, not an ordinary day.

  2. 3. Is the building mainly used for any of these?

Its main use, not something it hosts now and then. A hall with a weekly service or playgroup is still mainly a hall. Leave them blank if none is.

  3. 4. Do you ever hold events where 800 or more people are there at once?

Even once a year counts, such as a festival, a fair or a big match.

Martyn's Law starts at 200 people. Answer the questions to see which tier your venue is in, and what that means.

Based on the Home Office overarching factsheet and the tiers set by the Act. General information, not legal advice.

About the check

How accurate is this check?

It follows the tiers in the Act and the Home Office guidance, and it's a guide, not legal advice. The SIA plans to publish its own scope tool, expected in early 2027; your answer should match it.

What counts as the number of people?

The most people you'd reasonably expect in the building at the same time, including staff and volunteers, at your busiest times, even if those are only now and then. Under 200 is out of scope; 200 to 799 is the standard tier.

Do you keep my answers?

No. The check runs on this page in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us or stored.
