Made by SimpleKPI. A UK software company, founded in 2007.

We've spent almost 20 years building simple software for small to medium and enterprise customers. hailo is for the people who keep community venues running, most of them volunteers.

Where it started

A law for venues run by volunteers

Part of our commitment to SimpleKPI's customers is looking beyond KPI tracking, at the other problems they're facing, and building something that helps.

When Martyn's Law became law in April 2025, it was clear who it asks the most of: the village halls, places of worship, pubs, clubs and scout huts where 200 or more people gather on a busy night.

The law itself is sensible. It asks for a few simple plans and for the people with a part to play to know them. What's hard is finding the time, cutting through the jargon, and keeping it up to date when the people change.

So we built hailo to do the heavy lifting: plans in plain English, written for your building in about 30 minutes, then kept current all year.

What we kept hearing from venues

The same four things came up, whatever the venue.

  • Volunteers, not security staff

Most venues in scope are run by committees, trustees and volunteers who give an evening a week. Nobody has a security background, and nobody should need one.

  • Not much time

The Home Office estimates about 9 hours of managers' time just to plan the procedures. For a hall committee that meets once a month, that's a lot.

  • Plenty of fear

Search for Martyn's Law and you'll soon be offered courses, kit and consultants. The standard tier doesn't ask for any of them.

  • Hirers and helpers come and go

On many nights the people in charge are hirers or new volunteers. A plan in a drawer doesn't help them; a plan they've been told about does.

How that shaped hailo in four ways

Each part of hailo answers one of those problems.

  • Plans written for your building

hailo asks plain questions about your doors, rooms and keys, then drafts each plan for you to read, change and approve. A person always signs it off.

  • Briefing that reaches people

Every volunteer, member of staff and hirer gets their part by link or QR code, and confirms they've read it. You can see who has.

  • Private by design

The AI that drafts your plans never sees anyone's name, and details like where keys are kept are only shown to the people you choose.

  • Ready all year, not once

People change and buildings change. hailo reminds you when someone new needs briefing and when the yearly review is due.

Our standards

How we keep it accurate and simple

hailo is based on the Home Office's published guidance. It isn't endorsed by the Home Office or the Security Industry Authority (SIA).

  • Every fact about the law comes from the Act, the Home Office's guidance or the SIA, and each guide and post lists its sources.
  • Each guide shows the date its facts were last checked. When the guidance changes, we update the page and the date.
  • We say "ready" and "prepared". hailo helps you get ready; only the regulator judges whether a venue meets the law.
  • Made-up examples say so. The venues and people in our examples are fictional.
  • We write for every kind of venue and every faith: halls, pubs, clubs, huts, and places of worship of all kinds.
  • Everything we publish is general information, not legal advice.
